CO2 Carbon Offset Policy
As am efficient energy user we take great care to minimise our impact on the environment.
You may be surprised to know our energy use is less than the average household. Quarter energy costs are less than $600.00 AUD per quater that is $200.00 AUD a month which is just $50 per week. Our total business CO2 emissions including external transport and postage is less than 22 tonnes per year of which energy is 12 tonnes.
How we save energy for the size and equipment comes down to selecting the right technology in our high end PC fleet of Intel i7 based computers, 6 telecine machines, more VHS decks than you can point a stick at plus air conditioning ( reverse cycle - inverter) 2 plants for 9 kw and 20 flouro overheads. Sounds impossible but it is easy to achieve with PC's running ASUS EPU engines and green certified components plus Windows 7 on many PC's saving energy so the PC sleeps when not in actual use. Air conditioning is only used as required and costs less than $0.08 cents per hour to run.
Avid Tech also has the location benefit of the towns Wind Power providing Wonthaggi with 85% clean and green alternative energy.
Avid Tech requires suppliers to demonstrate similar efficient use of electricity and in the future we will only purchase from suppliers able to certify carbon reduction best practice for the industry so that we can be sure each stage and purchase of supplies is not adding to emissions due to old hat low tech ways of doing things.
Avid Tech is the only company in this industry to publish formal CO2 reduction policies and protocols. Carbon credits are being purchased by planting trees to offset our energy use.
In the future we hope to have solar energy to supplement our above policy aims.
It is another reason that Avid Tech leads and others follow reluctantly and usually 2 years or more behind our technology innovation.
