Avid Tech routinely convert very old 8mm movies and are experienced in handling and transfer of films that have an awful vinegar smell, a sure sign that film is disintegrating and needs to be converted to a digital format due to the breakdown of the film.

Advanced deterioration can deform film to the point of non-recovery so getting a transfer organised is an essential to preserve what you still have. FXF Frame by frame is still the only safe method for dealing with film affected by the dreaded vinegar effect as projection may very well destroy the film beyond repair.
